2017 Partner Events
Charleston STEM Festival Partner Events can happen any time of the year. Partner Events are from organizations that are hosting STEM/STEAM related events around the Lowcountry and are open to the public. These events are designated as an “official” Charleston STEM Festival Partner Event.
Summer STEAM Institute
Event Dates: June 19 – July 28, 2017
Location/Venue: College of Charleston | 66 George Street. Charleston, SC 29424
Time: 8:30 AM – 4 PM, Monday – Friday (Closed July 4th)
Target Audience: 3rd – 8th Grade Students, High School for Camp Counselors
Event Description: The Summer STEAM Institute is designed for creative and energetic students in grades 3–8 who want to spend their summer engaged in unique learning experiences that foster creativity to solve real world challenges alongside local artists, cultural organizations and professionals in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. No two weeks are the same!
Summer STEAM Institute at the College of Charleston:
June 19 – 23, Week #1: Roll ‘Em – We’ll roll out the red carpet for you! Come learn about movie production, stage & set design, editing, costume design, script writing, musical scores and more during this fun filled week in Hollywood.
June 26 – 30, Week #2: Super Heroes vs Sir Isaac! Did you know superheroes defy Newton’s Laws of Motion? Come test them out during this super fun week!
July 3 – 7 (no camp on July 4th), Week #3: Secret Code – Come experience coding and computer science. Create your own app and explore the world of technology during this not-so-secret week.
July 10 – 14, Week #4: Total Eclipse of the Art – Did you know we’re having a solar eclipse next month? That’s right! Come learn all about space through dance, visual arts, theatre and music. It’s OUT OF THIS WORLD!
July 17 – 21, Week #5: We’re #1 – Did you know Charleston was voted #1 City in the World by Travel & Leisure Magazine? Come experience the rich history, arts and culture behind this prestigious international award. Wear you’re walking shoes – we’ll be touring our city daily.
July 24 – 28, Week #6: DAT’s Right – Design, Animation & Technology, DAT for short, is sure to get your creative juices flowing. Join us for this fun filled week of cartoons, comics and computer science.
DETAILS & UNIQUE BENEFITS:
Open to all interested boys and girls in 3rd – 8th graders. No experience in art or science required.
Space is limited to 100 participants each week for more one-on-one time with artists and teachers.
Held Monday-Friday. Full week registration only.
Children are grouped by age. Parents may submit grouping requests if friends/family are attending the same week.
Each group will be led by certified teachers with assistance from local high school volunteers.
Each group will have 5-8 STEAM campers.
Groups will work with up to 4 different artists each week from a variety of artistic mediums such as dance, music, theater and visual arts.
Groups will work with a different STEM professional from the community each week such as architects, engineers, accountants and computer programmers.
All staff is First Aid/CPR certified and have passed SLED background checks.
Participants will receive a different camp t-shirt to commemorate each week!
Two weeks prior to your week of STEAM, you will receive an information packet via email providing all the details you need regarding drop off, pick up, security, allergies, car tags, grouping, etc.
