Event Description: Astronomy in the Park. Please come out and look through the various telescopes and see the what lies in our nighttime sky. You will have the opportunity to ask questions about the equipment and what you see in the sky. This event will be held weather permitting.

Astronomy Event - Mercury Transit

Target Audience: All Ages
Event Description: The planet Mercury will cross the face of the Sun.
Come out and look through telescopes fitted with safe solar filters. This is a rare event, with the last transit occurring in 2006. This event is free, but normal County Park entrance Fee will be collected.

CSU Hour of Code Event

Organizing Group: Charleston Women in Tech
Event Dates: 12/08/2016

Time: 6pm-7pm
Target Audience: Young ladies of all ages (girls only event)
Event Description: December 5-11 is Computer Science education week. In support of other nationwide events, CSU is teaming with Charleston Women in Tech to offer a “Girl’s Night” Hour of Code on December 8th. A flyer is attached.

Its free – there is ice cream and participants just need to bring some type of device – anything from a laptop to a phone will work.

Storm The Citadel

Organizing Group: The Citadel – STEM Center of Excellence

Event Description: The STEM Center at The Citadel, in partnership with Google and the School of Engineering, invites teams of elementary, middle, high school and college students as well as teams from industry, military, and community groups to compete in a variety of E-Week events. These events include bridge building, robotics, water bottle rockets and trebuchet. Preregistration is required to participate in the Trebuchet competitions but on-site registration is available for other events. The public is welcome to attend the event and cheer on the competitors (no registration required to attend).

A Paleontologist Walks into a Bar

Event Description: Darwin Week presents a hilarious and engaging hour of conversation and audience games with comedian Chris Duffy and internationally renowned paleontologist, fossil hunter, and writer, Dr. Phillip Manning. You’ll learn, you’ll laugh, and you’ll even have the opportunity to win some prizes. We’ll explore the history of evolution, what dinosaurs and birds have in common, and Jurassic CSI.

SC DNR Marine Resources Laboratory Tour

Target Audience: Anyone over age 10
Event Description: Come visit the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, Marine Resources Division biologists! Headquartered at Ft. Johnson on James Island, overlooking the Charleston Harbor, the biologists at this facility monitor and research our state’s marine resources, everything from algae to sea turtles. These researchers monitor South Carolina’s fish species to learn more about how these animals live and grow, and what types of habitats they need to survive. Learn about our mariculture research designed to develop improved technologies for producing seafood and enhancing depleted fishery stocks. You will be guided through the facility, stopping in multiple laboratories to observe current research and the tools they use to do it. Children must be 10 years old or older to attend. Must have closed toe shoes.
