History and Background

With the goal of increasing awareness of the role of science, technology engineering and mathematics (STEM) in society, promoting responsible science in the region, and conveying the joy of STEM, The Citadel, on behalf of the Lowcountry STEM Collaborative, submitted a proposal to the Science Festival Alliance to receive seed funding from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to launch a community festival in Charleston, SC. In August of 2013, Charleston was notified that it was one of 12 communities nationwide to be awarded funding and the Charleston STEM Festival became a reality. A planning committee made up of higher education and K-12 institutions, government agencies and STEM education organizations was formed to plan and execute the festival. Given the busy festival season in Charleston, a date of February 8, 2014 was selected as a festival kick-off date, chosen primarily to coincide with existing major STEM events taking place in the Charleston area. The February 8th kick-off event was followed by many regional STEM events including DiscoverE Week at The Citadel, Trident Technical College’s Family Science Night, the SC Department of Natural Resources Marine Tour, STEM Day at Patriot’s Point, Lady Cougar STEM Event at the College of Charleston as well as several others.
