As many in theDarwinWeek2016 Lowcountry know, The College of Charleston hosts Darwin Week each year in February to educate the general public on why scientific discovery is so important and how Charles Darwin embodied the true characteristics of a scientist – intellectual bravery, scientific curiosity and thinking. Piccolo Darwin Week, Darwin Week’s offspring, is an annual celebration of evolutionary science for children, and is a partner event of the Charleston STEM Festival.

This year’s Darwin Week, which extends from February 4 through February 14, will be kicked off with a comedy event A Paleontologist Walks into a Bar, a hilarious and engaging hour of conversation and audience games that will include exploration of the history of evolution, what dinosaurs and birds have in common, and Jurassic CSI.

The comedy event will be hosted by Chris Duffy, a nationally touring comedian and host of public radio’s You’re the Expert, where three comedians try to guess what a leading scientist studies all day. His shows have been featured in The New York Times, The Boston Globe, The Washington Post, and PBX NOVA. Chris is both a former fifth grade teacher and a former fifth grade student.

Chris will be engaging in conversation with Dr. Phil Manning, Professor of Paleontology in the Department of Geology and Environmental Geosciences at the College of Charleston. Dr. Manning, also Professor of Natural History at the University of Manchester (UK), has authored both children’s and popular science books and is a regular contributor to public speaking programs around the world, promoting the public engagement of science. He has written and presented many National Geographic documentaries, including Jurassic CSI, Dino Autopsy, Dino Death Match and T. rex Ultimate Survivor. Dr. Manning was appointed as the Science and Technology Research Council (STFC) Public Engagement Fellow (2013-2019), to promote science and technology to as wide an audience as possible.

The comedy event will be held on February 4, 2016 at 8 PM at Theatre99 downtown. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online at; seating is limited so act quickly and join in on the laughs while learning what you may not know about evolutionary science!

Sometime after the show and while supplies last, enjoy the latest Holy City Brewery creation brewed in honor of the Darwin Week – Holy Evolution – only available at Holy City. It’s the perfect libation to help you ponder our planet’s ecological balance!
